Preventative Health for Native American Seniors...

Wisdom Steps invites Tribal Elders to participate in activities that build their health.  Wisdom Steps began in Minnesota in 1999. Wisdom Steps is a partnership among the eleven Minnesota Indian tribes, three urban areas (Minneapolis/St. Paul, Duluth and Bemidji) and the Minnesota Board on Aging.

Wisdom Steps encourages elders to take simple steps toward better health. Activities such as participating in health screenings, attending a health education class, or enjoying a healthy living activity are promoted. Elders learn that the path to health is easy and can be walked by visiting with a physician and setting a personal health goal like losing weight or stopping smoking.

Wisdom Steps held it 6th Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, August 28, 2009 at the Grand National Golf Course in Hinckley, MN.  It was a brisky day, but all the golfers had a great time.  We had 20 teams registered. Team Garbow from Mille Lacs won first place.  Team Pemberton from Red Lake won second place.  Team Diver from Fond-du-Lac won third place. A major highlight of our event was a "hole in one" by Mike Buckanaga on hole 15. Congratulations to Mike!

We also had an awards dinner, raffle prizes and a silent auction. A huge Miigwech to everyone for supporting the health and wellness of American Indian elders in the Wisdom Steps program. Specifically to all our volunteers, the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe for sponsoring 11 teams and our Corporate Sponsors Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, Shooting Star Event Center and Casino and The Red Lake Nation. Click here to view pictures.

Simon and Rudy have been active in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Wisdom Steps program since it began nine years ago.  They are advisors on the Wisdom Steps Board of Directors and actively particpate in local Wisdom Steps events. They truly are role models for taking charge of their own health and practice good preventative health.  Both have earned the highest level award (Tier V) each year for nine years, for walking at the Wisdom Steps Conference. As volunteers they are not compensated for their efforts and attend Wisdom Steps meeting at their own expense. Simon is a member of the Red Lake Nation and Ruby is a member of White Earth.
